The 12th ClaviCologne Festival in 2025 will be an unforgettable five-day event featuring masterclasses and a thrilling piano competition. This unique gathering will showcase some of the world’s most renowned pianists, offering an unparalleled opportunity for young talents to learn from the best. Among the distinguished maestros joining the festival is Marios Papadopoulos, a celebrated British pianist, conductor, and educator.
Papadopoulos is looking forward to his first time giving masterclasses at ClaviCologne. "It is my first time giving master classes at the ClaviCologne festival, and I am excited to work with young aspiring students alongside a distinguished panel of colleagues," he shared ahead of the event.
A highly regarded figure in classical music, Papadopoulos was hailed by The London Times at his 1975 piano debut as possessing "all the attributes of one of the world’s greatest players." Throughout his career, he has performed as a soloist and conductor with leading orchestras and collaborated with legendary musicians like Vladimir Ashkenazy, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Maxim Vengerov, and Lang Lang. His acclaimed recordings of Beethoven’s sonatas are often compared to those of renowned pianists such as Schnabel and Barenboim.
Papadopoulos’s discography also includes performances of Stravinsky’s Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues. He has also recorded the complete Brahms violin sonatas with Vengerov.
Beyond performing, Papadopoulos is passionate about mentoring young musicians. He founded the Oxford Piano Festival in 1999 and has served as a juror for competitions like the Leeds International Piano Competition. His first memoir, Beyond Dreams and Aspirations: My Journey to Oxford, was published in 2021, offering insight into his career and musical philosophy.
Papadopoulos holds a doctorate in music and is a Fellow of Keble College, Oxford. He was awarded the Oxford City Certificate of Honour in 2010 and named an MBE in 2014 for his services to music.
For the ClaviCologne students, learning from such an esteemed educator will be a rare and valuable experience. The festival will provide an extraordinary opportunity to gain insight from one of the world's finest pianists and mentors.
